About this whisky
Glen Scotia Double Cask is a rich, fruity single malt from Glen Scotia Distillery in Campbeltown, one of Scotland’s smallest and most historic whisky regions. It’s first matured in first-fill bourbon casks, then finished for 12 months in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks, bringing together toffee, fudge and spicy fruit with a distinctive touch of Campbeltown sea spray.
Bottled at 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, it’s full of flavour and texture. Glen Scotia calls it the perfect introduction to its range, and it’s an award winner, including Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2023 and Best Campbeltown Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards.
Glen Scotia Double Cask Tasting Notes
- Nose: Crème caramel and toffee, with apple, peach and a breath of sea spray.
- Palate: Rich and spicy fruit, toffee and fudge, with apple, pear and a hint of sea salt.
- Finish: Vanilla oak and gentle spice.
It’s unpeated, so there’s no smoke. The coastal, salty note comes from the Campbeltown house style rather than from peat.
Why “Double Cask”?
The name refers to the two types of cask that shape the whisky:
First-fill bourbon casks
“First-fill” means the American oak cask is being used for Scotch for the first time after it held bourbon. These casks are still full of flavour, giving the whisky lots of vanilla, caramel and soft fruit.
Pedro Ximénez sherry casks
Pedro Ximénez, or PX, is one of the sweetest, richest styles of sherry, made from sun-dried grapes in southern Spain. After its time in bourbon casks, Glen Scotia Double Cask spends 12 months in casks that held PX sherry. They add layers of toffee, fudge, dried fruit and spice, plus a deeper colour.
